There's a bunch of supplementary costs to this program (i.e. washing clothes, bus fare, trips) that are not covered by the bursary. How MUCH do we need to bring in spending money to cover all these things?

Hey, I'm 17 from Massachusetts, and I'm considering attending the program, but I was wondering a bit about the age distribution — are there more 14- and 15-year-olds or more 16- and 17-year-olds? Or is there an even mix? I'd hate to be one of only three or four 17-year-olds and feel really left out/too old.

I went to Québec City for the French program in 06 and it was honestly a great time...to the person who was wondering if you should bring a fan....DO bring one cause you will only end up buying one once you are there, it is insanely hot especially if your not used to it. For roughly the first day and some of the next your allowed to speak English and most of the animators know some English so it won't be that bad. You usally get a nice bit of free time so you can go out on the town or what not, the classes are pretty small so you'll learn a nice bit of French (which is helpful when riding the bus and shopping and stuff). Hoped this helped, feel free to add me to msn if you have other questions...Have a great time!!
Sabrina

(I'm not trying to be annom. by not posting my email address; I just don't like it posted on the WWW.) I just have a few questions about the program: 1. How much free time do you have each week? 2. Are the French classes really good? do you learn a lot? 3. Outside of classes and on free time, do people speak French mostly? 4. Is there any time after classes to ask teachers questions; and 5. After the 5 weeks, how much better was your french?
Alex from SK

2006/06/25
Hey, just wondering...how formal is the final gala? Is it like a nice skirt/pants and a blouse or a long gown type of thing? Also, if we go in to town, would we be able to go to the movies?

2006/06/25
here is the answer to some of your questions.... te guy who said IS it worth it.... it is.... why do they say they promote it in norway? i am a Norwegian, and BTW i found it out on my own, but they say that because it makes it seem fansy schmancy and intternational to say that they advertise for it in norway.... but btw.... it is not so strange to advertise it in norway anyway... it is the country with the wealthiest people on earth.... and the standard of living is way above anywhere else HDI-ranking wise that is.... and concerning the gala.. it is quite formal.... so you need a suit for guys, and a dress/gown for girls... last year the ages spanned from 14 to 18, but its mostly 16 and 17 year olds goin... and if you worry about makin friends, don't... if you are not a complete loner and you are outgoin... you'll get by.... you can go to the cinemas, i would recomend the cineplex or whatsitsname.... you can just hil a cab, and they'll take you there.... vieux quebeq is cool.... if you wanna find a good place to hang out i suggest the wall in town..... dont bother buyin a pass to the gym... just take a run.... and you'll eventually find out that the bench is the best make out location..... hopes that answers some questions... if you have more questions send me an e-mail....
big joe

Vida
2006/06/21
No its not worth it ! If you have good firends and home and alot of fun why leave it for 11pm curfews woohooo...but if you are lacking in the friends department you'll loooove it.

Um, just wondering if it would be practical to carry my guitar or violin..
Liane
2006/06/15
it's wicket awsome! you guys will have fun. bring an instrument if you love playing it! if you have to room/ if you want to carry it would be awsome to bring. ps:classes aren't bad at all, they are not always fun, but they are never horrible, and they don't last long.
chelsi
2006/06/15
It is totally worth it! At first I thought it would be pretty bad doing an extra month of school too.... but it's not like regular school. You have like one class where you learn written french and an antelier (which is a really fun class)... go in drama its the funnest. Basically all the classes help you learn in a fun way. The actual French class isn't allll day, plus I was in elementary 2C so all we did was play fun games. Also, you do get a lot of free time to go to the beach and chill out.... about sleeping in... I got up early because I was having so much fun I didn't want to miss anything.... and yes there are tons of hot guys in Quebec haha.Especially at the summer festival... and as for parties...yes there are.
Vida
2006/06/14
Hey Lori! On August 4th im taking the train at 1:10pm to Montreal, and then from Montreal to Ottawa! Car 3 Seat 15 WINDOW. haha

2006/06/14
Is it $30 per week for the internet, or is that for the entire 5 weeks?
Nicole
2006/06/14
   it's $30 for the 5 weeks
=)
2006/06/14
Hey guys! I was just wondering-what's it like after classes every day? Do they give you a variety of activities to choose from or do they kind of let you go and you have to find your way around? How do trips work? Do they just announce when they are going to take place and you pay as you go? Thanks! IM SO EXCITED!!!
Pritha
2006/06/14
im totaly undecided! cannot make up my mind, like seriously how can you dedicate an entire month of your summer life in school, when you could hang out at the beach, sleep in and chill out. I mean are there any hot guys here, parties? or is it all work, and of course you'll meet friends but really.. is it worth it? like completely honest answer!
..
2006/06/13
Sorry for writing so much guys, or if it's getting annoying! haha placement tests are written and start of very easy then gradually get difficult through the test. It not bad at all, and there is no pressure put on you. Just do your best and don't guess the answers. The first level is very basic. Mostly words and flash cards and basic french conversation. They get harder by level, learning more tences and what not, and I know the highest level last year had to read a novel that month and at the end write a repot.

Candice
2006/06/12
is anyone going to montreal after the 5 weeks are over and want to travel together by bus or train?
Lori
2006/06/12
I was wondering what the placement test is like. Is it oral or written or audal or an opstacle course maybe? Any information about the different levels would be appreciated, like how basic is the lowest level and whatnot...
Matt
2006/06/10
When I went last year only a few people brought skateboards to the place I stayed, bikes are to big to be carrying around, but roller blades aren't so bad. It is worth it to pay for the internet because it's cheeper then the long distance calls, and plus you get to talk to more people. I don't know much about the fitness room, I didn't use it at all last year and the permission form came in the mail but I didn't get the form this year so I dont' know what you do about that. Anndd now about the trips, Le Ronde is awsomeeeee and definitly worth paying for, whale watching isn't bad at all, last year we got to see a blue whale, so if you like that sort of thing go for it, rafting is apparently a lot of fun! we didn't get to go after when I went last year but I have some friends who have done it. I don't know much about the biodome, but whatever you pick you are sure to have a bunch of fun. Ok thats it, hats off to anyone who actually read all this, haha. ps: bring a fan!!!!! It gets really warm, and a small fan in your room really helps.

So....one question....is it better to bring a laptop of to use the computers that they have there??if you guys want to add me on msn, its gillian_n15@hotmail.com...anyone going from northern ontario?? Gillian
Gillian
2006/06/10
to answer some questions i saw, check the "Informations" part on this side, and open the PDF... page 7 gives you a basic list of things to bring... i may note "rollerblades" were suggested:P also... it mentions "Every student is responsible for the washing of his/her own clothes and towels.    It says in the information thing that we need to have written authorization from our parents to use the fitness room.. is there a certain sheet that needs to be filled in or something? and if it, where do I get it? And is it worth it to pay for the internet, or will I barely use it while I'm there?

When we get to the airport in Quebec, where do we meet the people from this program? In the FAQ section it says that they'll be there to meet us, but where exactly?

The airport is reeeeally small and there are a few animateurs wandering around with a list of everybody's names. You'll spot them as soon as you come through the gates.

There are shared bathrooms and showers are separated by walls." ...I'm hoping theres doors on the shower walls, or curtains or something? haha.. that could get awkard. As well, If I bring my bike, would I be allowed to keep it in my room?

2006/05/15
hey Jesslynn, its my first time going too, and I'm not gonna lie, my French is pretty terrible too, I cannot speak any of it fluently, so we can just both be pretty bad at it together
Candice
2006/05/15
I think the whole point of this trip is to stick a whole bunch of bad french speakers together so we can LEARN how to actually speak it semi-decently. With that said, if you were any good at french, you would probably not be in this program. Hence, my french sucks too. As does everybody elses, so don't worry.

I sent an application to go to a French Immersion school in Nova Scotia, and I was put on a waiting list. Just the other day I got an acceptance letter to go to Quebec City, I'm really excited and sending my application in right away, however I'm still really concerned... I have a few questions if someone wouldn't mind answering... My French is very limited and I know my basics pretty much, isn't it hard communicating with someone who is limited like me? and.. By the end of the 5 weeks will I pretty much be able to speak French fluently? I would really like to know, because I'm scared of meeting new people who I can not communicate with since I can't speak all that great. and thats about it.. Thanks!
Jesslyn
2006/05/08
I went last year from the waiting list. There is a high chance of going of you really want it. It was completley amazing, and I think I am going back this year. I loved it! Good luck to anyone on the waiting list, my school sent them in late last year too, and thats what happened to me.

   1) dont worry about getting a bus pass. its really complicated to try to get one, and not worth it. you dont take the bus everyday, so it would be real waste to blow 50 bucks on it. 2) the rooms are just big enough to fit the bed, sink, desk, dresser and chair, with enough room to still move around. thery're not very big, but you dont spend a lot of time in there anywasys. 3) you get a fair amount of free time. the classes are in the mornings till noon, and then a couple days a week there's the 'workshops', and mandatory activites. there's usually something planned for you on sundays, but saturday you get the whole day to do whatever you want. so you get lots of time to run around the city or just hang out on campus. 4) you are supposed to go out in groups, and you have to sign out when you leave and sign in when you get back, but for us they didnt really check if we were goin out in groups. 5) classes are just like taking a french calss at school. except better. for me at least. i learned more in class those 5 weeks than i did in junior high and high school. the 'workshops' vary, theres a lot of them, from history and culture to arts and crafts and even a circus group. ya. so i hope that helps. if you have more questions you can e-mail me.

I'm going to quebec this summer as well. There are a few questions that i have for those who already went. 1) Is it worthful buying a bus pass? I've already read that one bus trip costs about $2.50, and a bus pass is about $50. How many times do you get to go to the city? Will I need 20 bus fares or will it be less? 2)How big are the rooms? 3) How much free time do you get? By free time I mean no workshops and classes 4)It is compulsory to leave in a group of 4 people? For example if i'm going for a walk close to the campus, do I have to take 4 people with me? 5) What are workshops and classes like? I would really appreciate it if somebody answered my questions at least a couple of them. Thanks a lot

ok so the food...you get food coupons and you go to a cafeteria to eat. Breakfast..there were always muffins and thats all i think i ate, there were other things too but i didnt like it, there was always toast and stuff liek that...just think hospital cafeteria food for breakfast...like eggs werent that good and stuff...for lunch and dinner you actually go to the places in the cafeteria (its kinda like a food court in a mall but no restaurant names you'll know) the menu is a but repetitve, you can always get salad fries or pizza and things like that..again i dont think it tastes as good as a mall food court, the food is liek a hospital cafeteria but like think of where you are, not going to be gourmet or anything

Somebody said here, that food is not allowed in the rooms. Do they actually come in and check everything? Is there something like a conveniece or a grocery store nearby? If I bring a teakettle with me would that be a problem (i can't survive without tea=))? And could somebody please describe an approximate daily menu? I'm sorry I'm making a big deal out of it, it's just that I have some stomach problems, and reading all the comments about food doesn't make me very optimistic.
Olga
2006/04/21
I went last year and i had food in my room all the time i even brought a mini fridge it worked real well. There is a grocery store located nearby that you can even walk to, so you can buy snacks and stuff for your room. I hoped that helped

hey so for laptops....you can bring one, they are good for listening to your music and stuff like that because it gets borrrrring in your room after 11 when you arent allowed out...they charge you something like $60 for internet for the whole time....you can also walk to the library where the net is free if you use their comps or plug ur laptop in if you bring a cord..last year when we got there they said no internet after we had brought our computers but we just had to walk to a building and leave it to be configured for a few days.....hope this helped with the qestion

you can speak english over the phone, and you can listen to english music, but only in your headphones, you can listen too all kinds of french music and bug the animateurs by blasting it out from four speakers near their offices, and in the elevators, that is really funny, especially if its an annoying song..... when it comes to drinking, just dont get caught, when it comes to makeoutspots, its "the bench". youll figure it out, and the best place in quebeq city is the wall, and the martini bar at the bottom....dont let the people scare you away from this, you learn a lot of french, but the cerfew is early, and you need to wake up at about 6 if you want to take ashower, and pass the breakfeast line, the food tastes ok, but you'll probably eat a lot of frites. if anyone has any questions, i'll be happy to answer them, if anyone from europe is going, expect that only one or two people are from europe there, but several with european relatives. and all guys going, the boy:girl ratio last year was 1:3, so pretty much every guy has a chance... it still helps to be a 2 m tall Norwegian.....it's easy to kep things on the down low, me and laura did that for three weeks...

Residences are...okay. Your room consists of a bed, a desk, a closet, a sink, and a dresser. Bathrooms are down the hall and each one has three showers. You get used to it all after a couple days and you don't spend much time in res anyway. Again with the french, you don't HAVE to speak it 24/7. In class, during activities, and generally whenever there are animateurs around, you have to, but during free time there's nobody around to catch you so speak whatever language you want. Money...that varies. If you're a BIG shopper don't be surprised if you spend close to a thousand. The average person spent between 350-650. This of course includes extra activities, off-campus meals, malling, bus fare (kinda pricy ~$2.50/one-way trip), etc. feel free to add me to msn if you have questions- tut2005@hotmail.com. toodles

With regards to drinking many people got away with it but since some of the leaders read this site I wouldn't advize spilling about it.. email somene lol! And it was a good time. The things that were mentioned by Sara were about the only drawbacks -- and if you'd let little things like that spoil amusement parks, Old Quebec, trips to Montreal and meeting so many great people you shouldn't go anyway. It got anoying at times but definitely did not ruin the summer..
rj.
2006/02/22
ok, sara made this program seem a lot worse than it is. ya, you're expected to speak a lot of french, but thats why you're going, you'd be surprised how much your french improves after something like this. so the rules are kinda strict, and the foods not always that great, but its an amazing trip, you make so many friends and have so much fun that none of that stuff really seems to matter. (plus, there's ways to get around it, haha) dont focus on the little things that seem to annoy you, like the rules, you'll never forget a summer like this, so make it the best you can.
kaylee
2006/02/21
the 'explore' program is confusing! on the site it says that you can choose spring or summer, and you choose one of the participating schools across Canada to go to for 5 weeks. This French Summer Program works for this too??
cindy
2006/02/21
This program works with Explore. On the table with all the programs/scools on the Explore site, you'll see the College St-Charles-Garnier one at the bottom (summer)- that's this one.
Evan
2006/02/21
Hello well see i want to do explore program.. says deadline 28th :p and need to pick a place to go... well sounds neat here.. but i so soo bad at french.. so idk if i should go here or where i should go.. but i so want to go. and need to like decided soo soon. cause dead likes like eekk...

As far as I know, your chances of getting the bursary are pretty good. If you don't get it at first, some people drop-out, so you'll probably take theirs. For wake-up times, it all depends on the shower situation. Classes start at 8:30, so youhave to make sure to leave time time to eat and walk to class. Line-ups for showers start any time after 7:15 so if you don't mind waiting in line for~5 minutes, wake up around then, but if you want to avoid lines, you better be an early riser.

This program looks like so much fun! If anyone's considering going and you're worried about not having any friends... don't worry, I wanna go and I'll be your friend for sure! I was just wondering whereabouts everyone spends their time? I went to Quebec City for my grade 8 trip and it was in Old Quebec - - amazing - - is this the same?

2005/12/30
hey ayan, yah there is lots of free time where you can shop / go explore the city / hang out or whatever you want! Most weekends are free and maybe 3 weeknights per week. As for money to bring, there are a few optional excursions ( we went to montreal, an amusant park, and whale watching) that cost around $50-80 ish, so if you are interested in that you might want to bring extra money for souverniers and restraunts. You should defiantly go, I promise you that it will be the time of your life!
maddy
2005/12/29
I went shopping ALOT because stores in Quebec are amazing.. and there are plenty of opportunities to go shopping in Old Quebec. Umm... as for spending money... It depends on your habits. I mean, if you eat out alot it can be very expensive. I'd bring at least $300, so that you can do some activities and pay for the bus. You can always get your parents to put money into your account if you run out.
Vida Nelson
2005/12/29
Thanks for the help Evan! Does anyone know how much spending money we should bring? Is there a minimum amount that everyone should have? Also, are there any opportunities to shop for souveneirs, clothes, etc?

HELP! Does anyone know how the bursary program (EXPLORE) works? I was on the website for it and it said that the bursary is for $1,900 but apparently this program costs like $600 more. Does anyone know if EXPLORE will cover the cost of hte extra $600 or if I have to do it out of pocket? I assumed that EXPLORE covers the cost of everything except transportation and personal expenses. Please email me or answer here. THANKS!

also michelle, to add to vida's lovely answer yes it improves a lot. my french was intermediate... but i imporved my accent, learned more vocab, and learned little quirks about quebecois slang and idioms. twas useful if u plan on continuing wit french after! i hope you choose this program!
tim ira.
2005/12/02
Michelle- I would say my French improved alot. Before I went I had the worst pronounciation in the world. My written french didn't get better, but my speaking skills did. Once you're there you'll just start speaking and realize how big of a vocabulary you already have, and your confidence in French will be better. For spending money I spent about $1500, but I did WAY to much shopping. The mall was like a five minute walk from campus. There is alot of freetime, but the activiites at the school are REALLY fun. They have these pretty sweet dances, take you to amusement parks, and always have optional activities on the go.

2005/08/22
Hey hey everyone! Wow, it is so hard to believe that the five weeks that we all anticipated so much are finally over ( plus a week of at home recovery!!) The reason why I am posting here now is to thank everyone who may have met me or in some way made my summer better by doing something or saying something that brightened my day... thanks! This may sound like a really sappy message but today isn't my best day. Not everyone who went to this program left a loving home where everything was #1. I longed for the freedom of the burdens and headaches that my home life had and also really wanting to learn French, altogether made this summer program so great for me! I truly had an awesome time and wish that I could have gotten to know more peple than I did! Now being back here really got me longing for the "En Francais a Quebec!" experience all over again! Je t'aime! ! ! Keep on smiling everyone!!!
thanks so much =)

Vida
2005/07/08
You have to sign up in advance for the extra trips. Sign up is sometime during the first week. There are mosquitos in Quebec, I don't remember then being really bad but you might want bug spray for sitting outside or something. Last year, most of the people in the program were really friendly, I made a lot of friends. You DON'T need to bring lap tops. There's no internet connection in the rooms, and you wouldn't need to type anything for class. The only reason you could bring it would be if you wanted to play games on it or something. Hope that helps you guys, email me with any questions and I hope you call have a blast!! I wonder if any of last year's animateurs will be back?
Laura

I'm kinda nervous b/c I don't know anyone going in, and I might get paired up with all littler kids b/c I'm not too great at French. Are the kids in the program friendly? It seems from the forum that a lot of you already know each other, and I have bad experiences with making friends at camp... :( IM me: everthepsychic

Maddy
2005/07/06
I'll try to answer some of the questions. Last year there was an ATM on campus, it's not at the same place this year but there is probably an ATM on campus or close by. Last year, buying a bus pass was a really good idea, I think we saved money and it was much easier than having to have tickets or change and dealing with transfers and stuff, which we did for the first few days of August (this from the small town girl who had never been on a city bus before last summer.) This year, because you're there later, you might want to figure out how many times you'd go on the bus and whether it would be worth it for you. I recommend it though. Ashlin: The train station in Quebec is in Charny, which is across the river from the city (on the Levis side.) It was about a 20 minute taxi ride, if I remember correctly. If you're taking the train back to the Maritimes, it doesn't leave until about 9 or 10 pm each night. Last year, a lot of people went on the extra excursions, I did and they were awesome. La Ronde was especially fun. If anyone has any other questions, giving me an email at roper.laura@gmail.com will get you a quicker response! Have fun!
Laura
2005/07/06
Ummmm....does anyone know if there is an ATM machine on campus? It would be nice to get a response asap! thanks
Sarah

I was wondering if it would be sensible of me to bring my tennis raquet. Are there courts around or anyone who wants to play with me whos not exactly an skilled player? I just like flailing around the court and having fun! What else should we bring for free time/sundays?
Claire

i'm confused. is food provided? or ar you given money to buy food?
Mary
2005/07/04
I was talking to someone who went already and they said that you definitely want to get a bus pass.
Eric
2005/07/04
Buying a bus pass seems pointless to me, since it's a monthly pass for July, and the program starts mid-July.

hey i have a question about money since its unwise to carry large sums of money around, i will be keeping the vast majority of my money in my checking acount but of course this is an american account, will atms in quebec be able to withdrawl canadian money? if not, i do not see how i will be able to access my money

VIDA - they give you a card when you register that's automatically loaded with (i think) $250 (per week). but if you want to (at least last year) you can/could pay cash too. (ie if you run out of money on your card since you can't do cash advances).
Pamela
2005/07/03
ERIC - they have pillows in the rooms, but I'm very happy I brought my own. VERY happy

okay I'm answering a bunch of questions at once so here I go: HARRY POTTER get it at archambault, chapters, coles, any bookstore. they should have it in english. if not, preorder on amazon and use the address they gave you for it. FLIP FLOPS always a good idea for public showers. not that they're gross, it's just a hygene thing. that and they're always good when it's hot (it's been 30C + lately) SNACKS always a good idea too. anything non-perishable. anything microwavable works too. LAUNDRY get your parents to show you before, bring your own detergent or buy it in a grocery store. bring your own iron.you can iron on towels if they don't have boards. but they did last year TOWELS/LINENS towels are needed, linens are not. they provide pillowcases and whatnot. but bring your own towels ALARM CLOCK a must have. i brought the one in my room, but a travel size one works too. just make sure you have an alarm on it. PLACE LAURIER is big, but compared to the mall i go to (in suburban montreal) isn't that big FEMALE/MALE SEPERATION very strict, can get kicked out. same thing if you're not straight and in a room of the same sex for sexual reasons. you can get in trouble (trust me!!!) TO THE IDIOT POSTING ALL THE SEX STUFF get a bleeding life. besides, nothing can/should happen in rooms, that's what free time's for ;) IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS (aside from sex stuff) EMAIL ME, ADD ME TO MSN OR AIM (AT SULLIVANS)
Pamela
2005/06/30
I hope they're not too strict about the male/female separation... how else are we gonna get some bangin? I just cant wait for the hot guys and girls who are gonna be there... guys with their huge packages and girls with boobies

since everyone is asking a bunch of individual questions i think it would be good idea someone who has gone before to just list everything they can think of that we will need just to set the record straight, i think all new people would appreciate it, THANK YOU!

Might I add that I am a great kisser? I'm a boy - tall, handsome - and I'm not shy to say what all of the guys will do. That's right... while you girls talk, guys will probably be getting it off in their bedrooms, wishing it were beautiful girls touching their penises. I'm sure gonna join in.

i have started packing and i just have a couple of questions. i am assuming there are laundry facilities on campus, and i was wondering if they also provide irons, ironing boards, etc? and i was also wondering if anyone would recommend bringing flip flops for the showers, if they are gross, or what. anything other things like this that you wouldn't necessarily think of but that would be good to have?
Rebecca

haha I love how you already started packing Rebecca. Remember you have to come over to help me with mine. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had any good restaurant or mall suggestions.

Universite Laval is on Blvd Laurier and there's Place Laurier, a supposedly huge shopping centre on that street. There's also Place de la Cite... it sounds like a pretty central place. I know this of course because I looked up bookstores where I can buy Harry Potter 6 when it comes out on the 16th. lol I second the question about flip-flops, and anything else we should bring that we might not think about...

hi, i was wondering if anyone could tell me which of the following i need to bring: towels, bedding [sheets, pillowcase, etc.], alarm clock, iron and ironing board [i third the former comments], etc. basically like the normal stuff you use, is there anyone who can recommend what to bring? thanks.
leanne
2005/06/29
some things that a relative of mine who stayed in residence recommended to bring were flip-flops (for both girls and guys), laundry basket, laundry detergent if you wish, snacks (which i now have many of), cd player, knapsack, bag for going to pool, alarm clock, and those little things that you first don't think of!! make lists of all those little things as it is so easy to forget!! hope my advice helped...

Dp you suggest bringing some snacks to keep in your room? For the people that have already gone... what are some things you wished you brough or were happy you brought?? How many suitcases did you bring. My limit on the plane is 2 so they are going to be BIG suitcases!

MICHELLE - no, at least as far as I know you can't get internet in your room, even if you pay for it. if you want it in your room the only option would be buying a wireless card with the little satilite antenna that you pay outrageous amounts of money for through a cell phone company... (i can't really explain it). you can always look for places with wi-fi or whatever. especially for places with FREE wi-fi (which is always much fun). i wouldn't really recommend bringing a laptop though. (at least at the campus last year) the locks weren't exactly good quality...

Hey- I was wondering about Internet connections... I know that if you pay the 11 bucks or w/e u can get it, but I asumed that was for a computer lab- though i want the connection in my room so i can use my labtop and not piss off by forgeting or not finding the time to email her ... AnywayZ QUESTION: Can we get internet connections in our room if we pay the weekly charge??

What type of formal dress is required?
Lauren
2005/06/25
LAUREN - you need formal wear (a dress, or a skirt, or dress pants, whatever) for the gala. it's a dressup type event. but other than that you don't need anything dressy. (just think graduation. not prom, but the thing where you get your diploma ... i wore the same thing. minus the cap and gown)

Hey, regarding school and work and stuff like that, are we gonna have a lot of work to do!? Like say on our free time? How intense is the school work? And if ne one hasnt added me yet...courtney_sparkes@msn.com! Looking forward to seeing you all!
Courtney
2005/06/24
HARIS - if you look at last years schedule (it's on this site) you can see that Saturday, Sunday, most of Friday and Tuesday, and Wednesday nights are free time. Also sometimes last year people would rush to Wal-mart or whatever between activities, although it's slightly more risky doing that... COUTRNEY - every class is different (think about how in normal school there could be two classes, of the same level but with different teachers. those two classes have different homwork, stuff on exams, etc), but last year my class didn't have much work outside of class. i'd spend maybe 30 minutes every couple nights doing class work, like writing an oral, or looking up words. other classes had projects and stuff too. but after curfew you can do your homework. curfew just equals you having to be in your room, and being quiet. (although don't practice orals then, i got in trouble for that once). so really, if youdon't mind staying up to like midnight or whatever you can easilly just do your homework after curfew. DON'T FORGET ANYONE, EMAIL ME, ADD ME TO MSN OR AIM (AT SULLIVANS) IF YOU WANT TO ASK ME ANYTHING. NOTHINGS TOO STUPID OR WHATEVER.
Pamela
2005/06/23
This is craziness...... like 2 weeks left. I hope I dont get put into the sped class but if I do I hope we have less homework then the advanced class. And I hope all the cool people are going to be in the sped class so we can in turn be the cool class. Anyways how many nights in a week do we get for free time, where we can go out to the city and etc..
Haris
2005/06/21
ERIC - the billet de comportement is basically what you get when you break the rules. if you get one, something (i don't remember what) happens, two = a call home to your parents (i believe) and three = going home at your own expense, no refund. you can get them for breaking curfew, speaking english, skipping manditory (obligatoire) activities, things like that. hope i helped.

MADDY - I'm not sure about this year, but I'd bet good money that there isn't a phone in the rooms again this year. Last year most floors had a little closet like room with a pay phone that you could use. LAUREN - From what I remember visitors aren't allowed on campus, but you can meet up people when you go out, one of my friends met up with her great-aunt on campus (just as a meetup point) and then went to Vieux-Quebec together. IF ANYONE HAS ANY QUESTIONS MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS MY MSN AND MY AIM IS "AT SULLIVANS" FEEL FREE TO ASK ME ANYTHING REGARDLESS OF HOW STUPID OR WHATEVER.

Jenn, the rooms last year weren't air conditioned. I can't speak for this year because it's at a different campus, but I doubt it. A small fan would be a good idea. There were a few nights last summer when I really wished I had one (not many because the weather wasn't super hot, but a few.) They were fairly strict about curfew, I never broke it but I think you got an "billet de comportement" if you did. Also, the rooms are assigned before you get there. There was some sort of system, I think last year it was by age (all the 15 year olds on 1 floor, 16 year olds on the next one etc) Also, to the people coming from Mt. Uniake, I'm from Pictou County, Nova Scotia! (just outside of New Glasgow) It's great to see people from NS going. Is anyone coming from the Maritimes taking the train?
Laura
2005/06/14
thanks laura for your info about the rooms. do you know if people who were from the same places (and were the same age) were put next to each other?? thanks again. matt =)

PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GO TO CONCERTS - please, for the love of God, Allah or whoever you may worship, read what I wrote below regarding concerts. (there always is the festivale d'ete du quebec. les trois accords are amazing. and simple plan's playing if you like them *gags*). SARAH - you have to write exams in class. it's like an end of the year exam in school. your teacher will tell you more. JENN - although I can't speak for this year, everything last year was clean. the beds were just ... used well. they were just really soft. not dirty or uncomfortable really. just super soft. the showers and toilets and everything are private (the showers last year had a stall door, a small entry thing and then a shower curtain) and clean. if at any point during camp you aren't happy, there's a "conseil d'etudiant". every class has a rep (i was it for my class) and you can voice your concerns then, or approach the animateurs if you want. oh, and you only get the schedule when you get your room key and stuff (the day you register). IF ANYONE HAS QUESTIONS FEEL FREE TO EMAIL, MSN (this email address) OR AIM (at sullivans) ME!!! I CHECK MY EMAIL A THOUSAND TIMES A DAY AND I'M ON ALL THE TIME (I lack a life ... except work. woo -bleeding- hoo).

maria
2005/06/07
TO ANYONE ASKING ABOUT THE WARPED TOUR: you CANNOT go to it if there is not free time, you must be back to campus by curfew. you cannot go for the whole day or whatever. so if you're planning on going, make sure you'll be able to get there and back during free time or else you're in big um... trouble (not the word i wanted to use). It's the same with shows. ones in Montreal WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO GO TO. with ones in Quebec City, it's the same deal. you have to be sure to get back before curfew and be gone only during free time. i don't think it's worth it. i'm a total music freak (totally elitist. i don't know why you'd want to go to warped tour, but whatever) and in my experience, most shows end around 10:30 or 11:00. there's no way you'd get back in time. just my words of advice. so i hope none of you have bought tickets, cause if you can't go (to the warped tour, or a show) you can't refund them. - Email me if you have any questions!

ERIN - whenever there's free time you can go to vieux-quebec. you go by yourself (well, with friends, but you know what i mean). there's tons of free time. LAUREN - for classes bring normal school stuff: a notebook, french/english dictionary, besherelle, pens, pencils, white-out, erasers, that kind of thing. KRISTEN - my friends hate that i mention "well, one time at french cap" so much. plus i practically always say the same things. heh. ANYONE ELSE - if you have any questions feel free to ask me!! (although I have no idea about the information packets) cheers, pam

Carly - last year you could buy computer access / week for around 10$/week (I think. I only did it once, and used the computer once). There are internet cafes in Vieux-Quebec. One of them was like 2$ for an hour or something like that which is a waaaaaay better buy.

.. - for whatever reason I remember them sending out the travel thing seperately... but I could be wrong. but that's one of the things that's good to ask the college itself. :\

2005/05/22
We are supposed to get our information packages in June but on the website it says that we have to submit our traveling information by June 1st (under the link ready to go?)... What happens if you don't submit it? I'm confused!
,,

umm, how about just send in your information ASAP? i mean, if they give you deadlines, they tend to want them met, correct?

Hey guys! I went to this program last year and I had the best time! There was so much to do and the animateurs were really nice! I learned a lot of French, and even class wasn't ALWAYS boring. If anyone has any questions about what you're headed for, add me to MSN, I'd be happy to tell you all about my summer last year! On ne soubliera jamais!! jodster02@hotmail.com - Jodie

anon - as far as i know, very strict about the alcohol. i think it was there that they said if you're 18 you can drink, but not to come to the campus drunk, or bring it with you. (i went to two trips last year, and i think it was here). .... - the food was quite good. you don't always have to eat there. (if you have free time you can get food, or get stuff delivered). i don't think anyone rented a fridge or microwave. the campus last year actually had 1 or 2 microwaves. people used it for popcorn and whatnot.
Pamela
2005/05/20
Hey all! I was just wondering about food. DO you have to eat at the cafetria all the time? Is it good? Healthy? Would you recomend renting a fridge or microwave? Can you use the kitchen? Thnx!

george - the extracurricular stuff works kinda weird, you get a schedule when you register (when you get your room key and whatnot) and it will tell you when stuff's happening. alot of things happen every monday or whatever, but some things happen once every other week, once every other day, or almost everyday. it depends on the activity. if you go to "calendar of the summer" and click on "activities you can join in" you'll see last years calendar of stuff that was happening during free time. the animateurs(rices) will keep you up to date so don't worry! to the other people - i don't know too much about time stuff since i a) came at like 2pm and b) got a drive both ways... but don't worry about it. with things like that you can contact the college and they'll let you know!
pamela
2005/05/15
george - all activites during the week (except the free time stuff) is oblibgatory. anything you pay for (ie. la ronde) and the free sunday trips are optional.
Pamela
2005/05/15
Thank You, and on the subject of extracurricular activities, about how long is each one? And are there different extracurricular activities each day, like a AB schedule? Or are they all on the same day like a block schedule? thanks again!
George

is it mandatory to do all the extracurricular activities?

.. - well this year the campus is A LOT closer than it was last year to vieux-quebec. it takes maybe 30 minutes or so i'm thinking. maybe less. (and it's one bus now compared to two!). during a regular day you wake up,do your stuff, have breakfast, go to class, have a break, have more class, lunch, either your atelier (workshop) or an activity, free time in between, and well, there isn't really a regular day, everyday you're doing something that you didn't do the day before. but if you look at the 'calendar of the summer' you can look at last year's calendar. :)
Pamela
2005/05/09
Hey... I have a couple questions... Is the campus far from the "downtown" area? and... what is a regular day like?? Thanks so much!
..
2005/05/08
Are we allowed to leave campus on weekends to go stay somewhere else?
New
2005/05/08
new - you have to be back on campus for curfew. it's 11 or 12 on weekends... i can't remember which. but provided you aren't doing activities you can go out until curfew with friends.

The only thing is I wish that I would have got into the program last summer, when I knew ppl that were going to this school, (I'm from Ont) but all you newbees are going to be awesome right???    Maddy - last year it was mostly girls (there were two buildings at the campus last year, one was all girls and the other was mostly girls. There were 2 boys floors). It's first come, first served no matter what.

Maddy - If i remember correctly the weekends tend to be a) free time or b) trips. If you don't have any manditory activities, you can sleep in all you like. I passed several weekends very quickly because I tend to sleep until like 2 or 3 in the afternoon. I think that's all you asked. but if you have anymore questions feel free to email me
Pamela

On the weekends is it always free time or are there planned activity's and such... also do you ever get to sleep in!? haha thanks alot

Kate - one thing that you need to know first is that the location of the camp has changed (last year was at Campus Notre Dame de Foy, this year it's at Universite Laval). But last year there were around 6 or 7 showers per floor, and like 15 people per floor. You can kinda get a feel for when people take their showers within the first week or so. And one thing I'd reccommend are either showers right before curfew or during free time since alot of people get them over with when they wake up or a while before curfew. But it's mainly just a matter of personal preference I guess. :\ Hope I helped.
Pamela
2005/04/14
what is the shower situation? especially for girls... like how many showers are there for what number of people? does it take forever to get a shower or do you have to get up at a very early time?
kate
2005/04/10
susie - the one thing that you gotta remember is you get from this what you give. if you don't try to learn french and don't speak french whenever possible, you won't learn it. if you go to class and speak french there, but don't speak it outside of class you won't learn anything. i think that my french improved alot during my 5 weeks there. not so much how i use it, but my confidence which was really lacking (and is needed in a place like monteal that's quite french). also if you have a negative attitude towards the experience you won't enjoy it. and if you don't enjoy it people generally sense that. i mean i wouldn't want to be around someone who spends the whole time talking about how much they hate it. whoever wrote that thing before either was just trying to scare off people or really did have a bad time. but you can kind of tell that they probably had a negative attitude the whole time. if you have any questions, ask me! i'll try my hardest to answer them.
Pamela
2005/04/10
justine - since no one answered your question about hats. i'd say it's probably just a respect thing. i know when i was in elementary and high school we were forbidden from wearing hats in school because it was a respect thing. that and it was a distraction or something.
Pamela

ok now im 100% confused. i was ok before i started reading everything (not saying that what everyone is saying is bad, im just confused). so what u do is print off the registration forms, and the medical forms and then sent it off to the university? and then they send u an acceptance letter? how do u know u got bursary? and if u get bursary, does that mean you have to pay for everything first and then they pay you back? and whats OSAP? is it too late to register? i know to some people these will be really stupid questions, and they answer will be "read the information package" or somehting like that, but please!! if someone could email me with answers to my questions, i will be forever grateful, i am just very confused. thank you so much.

hi. ive left my name out as i would rather not say exactly who i am. i have been accepted to attend the program and was super excited! Then, i read this message below which says how many people are always in groups and that you do not learn all that much, etc. I know that you are not supposed to believe everything you hear, but because this is for 5 weeks, you have to make sure that it is worthwhile. I was wondering if people could respond to my message on the actual message board and direct it to "susie". Please, in all honesty, let me know how much you feel your french imporved. I am going there with the intention to learn more french then i can imagine, meet many new and different friends, and to have fun!...So.. have I made the right decision to go to St. Chalres Garnier? Last but not least, thanks for your help! ! !

Hi, I was wondering if anyone is from the Vancouver area and would like to travel to Quebec on the same flight and try to get a group discount. It'd have to be a group of 10 or more... and more then likely we'd be departing from the YVR (Van Int'l Airport) Contact me at fadedblack at gmail dot com.

So nobody in my town has got their letters yet :( . Anyways, I think the anonymous poster was just being anti-social. Sounds like there were tons of people there. They could of found at least one friend to make their trip more enjoyable. Plus, they sounded pretty negative. Anyways, if you're going add me to msn! I'm pretty sure I'll get to go, because if the EXPLORE program doesn't pay for it, the Yukon government does here :)

David - I'd say that you should bring (aside from the standard clothes and toilettries) things like pictures from home, books (for those nights when it's past curfew and you don't want to sleep), music (cds, discman, ipod, whatever), instruments (if you play any and they're portable), a camera, a french/english dictionary & a besherelle, cash (or do what i did. i have a joint bank account with my parents, they can access mine, but i can't access theirs, basically they can wire me money for free because of that), phone numbers/addresses you might want. that sort of thing. and if you're not getting a drive (i did... i think i was one of like 10 people who actually drove both ways) leave some spare room in your bags, you'll need it :) if you have any questions feel free to ask :)
Pamela
2005/03/24
Joyce - (eep I forgot to answer yours!) I'd say try to get to Quebec City around the afternoon. But obviously depending on where you live you might have to show up early (by a day or two, or in the morning) or slightly later (that night that is). I know some people last year had to go to Montreal then take a bus, so make sure you know in advance. (And count yourself lucky that this is post-JetsGo and all that. I was at a Model UN conference when they went bankrupt and a ton of people were stranded in Ottawa :\). But look at the Air Canada (or whatever airline it is) website and just figure out what sounds best to you. :) (hope I helped some)

I did the program last summer, and it was a wonderful experience. I'm so glad I went. My class had a presentation yesterday about the summer program at Université Ste-Anne, and I wanted to yell "no, don't go there, go to Quebec!" I'm also sure that the anonymous poster is just looking for attention, but when I saw the "small town narrow mindedness" comment, I had to add my 2 cents worth. I'm from rural Nova Scotia, about as small town as you can get, and one of the things that I enjoyed most about the the summer was the multi-culturalism. I loved meeting people from all over the world and learning about where they come from. We joked that my friend (also from NS) learned more Spanish than she did French from spending time with our Mexican friends. I just wanted to tell people coming this year that you will meet people from all over, and you will learn so much if you just keep an open mind and be accepting.
Laura

I second Pam's comment about spare room in the bags. I don't know HOW I got everything I took THERE, let alone how I got everything else BACK! haha [ok.. i know EXCATLY how i got it there... with a rollerblade sitting right on top of my yellow dress shirt! HAHA] .... don't take rollerblades, I didn't have time to use mine at all [all the rollerblading days were cancelled due to rain, and I was busy on my own time haha]

Hey everyone! I'm so excited. I got my acceptance letter last week and sent off my forms today! My friend Laura and I are counting the weeks until we both leave for that freakishly hot place, but EXTREMELY excited. 2005/03/21
To that anonymous person: Okay aside from the fact that I strongly believe that people who leave anonymous comments that aren't exactly um... nice are just attention seeking losers, sure, some of what you said was true. Yes, there are people who were smoking all the time and most people didn't even TRY to speak any French unless they absolutly had to. But I never ONCE wished I was anywhere else. I'm not exactly a conventional person (memories that made people remember me: translating for the director the first day and dying my hair pink one week in) and I was friends with all sorts of people. I was friends with people who were quasy conservative to the most politically active people you could ever wish to meet. I was friends with tons of people who aren't um... straight and with tons of people who are. I had friends who barely spoke English and friends who barely spoke French (and those who tried whenever they bloody well could). I'm sorry you apparenly had such a horrible summer, but your view of this camp was extremely small minded (& by the way, a huge chunk of the participants were from Toronto and I (& 2 other girls) am from Montreal. Those aren't what you would call "small towns"). & to the clothes comment. Um, WTF? I can't count the days I wore shorts on my left hand, I was wearing jeans and t-shirts most of the time. As alot of other people. You seem to have a pretty warped view.
Pamela
2005/03/20
Everyone looking at this site, your search for a French program is over! This is the one...I had an awesome summer and just reading about it on this forum is...emotional-lol, i'm lame. You'll have a wicked time and chances are if you were sleeping in your own bed and having those things we all have at home, you won't want to leave. You do have to make the comitment to speak French though...you'll learn some just being at the program, but so much more if you actually to the en francais thing! Pamela and Michael seem to be doing an exceptional job (clap clap) at answering all your questions, but feel free to e-mail me/add me. Summer '04 people-Thank you again for an awesome summer...miss you all and keep in touch! -Jun p.s.-anoymous person before me-it wasn't that bad, was it???

Jun, how are ya? I think that the annonymous person below [and I think I know who it is] just wants some pathetic attention. Why would they have even bothered to come back here and post if thats not what they wanted?
Michael
2005/03/18
I love how everyone is so full of "OMG! It was like the BEST summer of my life". This is the reality of it: -you spend about 90% of your summer wishing to be some where else -you meet the most narrow-minded small town folk who aren't into meeting different people (to some different is classified as something as meaningly as a different taste in clothing..i.e. actually wearing some) -when the animateurs aren't smoking their cigarettes in your face there off flirting (oh I'm sorry conversing) with each other -groups are unbelievably segregated and everyone is rude -the food sucks and, If you aren't into getting wasted and actually WANT to speak French, then this isn't the thing for you...just some words of warning from a summer 04 survivor.

I just had the most random urge to tell anyone that reads this that I have the camp song stuck in my head (again). It turns out my school and Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy were co-sponsors of some music festival at my school and I just started singing it. hehe. I rule! (And I still miss all my amigos!!!)
Pamela

Dear Pam, the amigos miss you too! And yay for singing the song... I haven't in a LONG time haha. Remember, there is the slight possibility of a Pam-Sarah-Michael get together in Ottawa in April... we can only hope! And good luck to eveyone who gets accepted, you guys will have a blast!

Everyone looking forward to going this year, you'll have a blast. If you're just considering it, I can guaruntee you'll have the best time of your life. The trip is amazing, exploring Quebec, the friends, les ateliers are awesome, the animateurs, and even the "Oblig-oblig-obligatoire" activities rock. The teachers are all great, I'm even going to visit mine this summer after the program. This is definitely an experience you don't want to miss, it'll be the best 5 weeks of your life. You learn french all the time, without even realizing it, and you learn so much more, it's great for your confidence and you're independence. Feel free to email me with any questions! Anyone from last year going back aside from me? Can't wait to see you all again!

hey, i was just wondering, it says that they are single rooms. is there any way we can request to have a roommate, because i think i'd really like to have one.
Ruth
2005/02/12
Ruth - All the rooms are single occupation. But if you want a roommate because you're worried about meeting people, trust me it won't happen (you'll meet tons of awesome people. and there's floor meetings and stuff too)
Pamela
